Hello Music Lovers,

I am sad to announce that this summer, Aug 5 – Aug 11, will be the last for the Mel Brown/Western Oregon University Summer Jazz Workshop. We were not given funding to continue next year. We would love for the final year to be one of the celebrations of all the wonderful things that MB/WOUSJW has been over the years. We have educated so many people – some young, some a little older – to the joy and depth of this great American art form: Jazz.

During our 19 years, we have won awards including for the best summer workshop of North America in 2004. We have produced Grammy-nominated artists and two time Grammy winner Esperanza Spalding. Our students have gone on to become successful artists in major urban areas like New York, Tokyo, and Los Angeles. We are proud of our advancement of jazz in the state of Oregon and our country.

However, this year our enrollment is low. In fact, many music camps have low enrollment this summer as well.

Have you wanted to attend but been too busy? Or did you enjoy jazz camp the year/years you attended? Did you make acquaintances, musical or otherwise that still continue today? Did you enjoy immersing yourself in jazz music? Did you participate in the master classes, big bands, small ensembles, as well as classes in music theory, business, and history? Did you enjoy observing concerts by world-class artists or thrill to your performances? Did you have fun and simultaneously learn?

If you say yes then this summer is your last chance to experience those feelings again.
Please contact melbrownjazz.com and apply for this summer’s workshop.
