The camp dates for 2018 will be August 5- August 11 so make sure to mark your calendars! This is going to be a great year for camp! Registration will open soon, but first things first, save those dates!
If you need help budgeting or saving up for camp you’ve come to the right place. There’s a lot of ways to make and save money without it becoming a burden.
- Applying for Scholarships: The Mel Brown Jazz Camp offers scholarship opportunities to all of its campers.
- Scholarship funding is based on generous donations. If you wish to contribute to the scholarship fund, please contact us.

There are also other institutions that give scholarships to students who want to attend summer camps, check around on Google to see what you can find and I’ll post some more here when I find links.
- Saving specific types of money: One way to save up money is to put aside particular denominations of cash whenever they come into your possession. Say, every time you get a five dollar bill as change you set it aside in an envelope or jar. If you come across 2-3 in a week you’ll have saved up $280-$420 by the time camp starts! Or you can save all of your pocket change. This really only works if you use cash all the time, but it can definitely add up quick and it isn’t too hard to do.
- Asking for Help: There are probably (hopefully) people in your life that support you in your pursuits of musicianship. Maybe your parents can support you part of the way, but you still need a little extra help? Try writing letters to the people in your life who want to see you grow as a musician, your grandparents, aunts, uncles, maybe your neighbor who loves it when you play your saxophone on the porch or a family friend who always wants to know when your next band concert is. Write up a letter explaining why you want to go to jazz camp, how much it costs, and ask if they’d like to sponsor part of your camp tuition. Of course you should also invite them to the concerts during camp (especially the showcase on Saturday August 6!) if they live nearby. Then send out this letter to as many people you can think of who might want to support you, it’s sort of like a Indiegogo campaign but in real life. Make sure to send thank you letters to anyone who supports you!
- Saving Consistently: If you have a job try setting aside 10% of each paycheck towards your camp fund. Or try following a savings plan, there’s one plan where you save a different dollar amount for every week of the year, week one is $1, week two is $2 and week fifty-two is $52! By the end of July you can save $450!
- Cutting out little things: do you always get Dutch Bros on the way to school? Or curly fries in the cafeteria at lunch? Try setting aside the money you would’ve spent on that towards camp instead. $3.50 for a medium mocha a few times a week adds up pretty quick.
