We know now that when learning is fun and exciting, the brain is actually growing many new dendrites that make connections with many other dendrites. The more connections the better. We also know now that boredom destroys dendrites. Small children quickly become bored with worksheets, especially skill and drill worksheets. Yet another reason to avoid skill and drill worksheets like the plague. Never allow your child to use a worksheet unsupervised. Some parents use worksheets to provide time to fix supper or add another load of laundry. Unfortunately, while you are npt looking, your child just might have practiced a mistake several times. The time you thought you saved is not nearly as much time as it will take to fix that mistake. If you consistently do these things, you might be able to successfully use worksheets; but, seriously, a few minutes of your personal time will provide better learning for your child than a truckload of worksheets.

If you are looking for printable worksheets for your preschool child, the array of choices can be a little intimidating. You may just be looking for a few pages to keep your child occupied with something more constructive than yet another half hour in front of the TV, or you may feel it is time you started helping your child learn the basic skills she or he will need for school. Whatever your motivation for looking for worksheets for preschool, there are a few points to consider before you decide which ones you want. If your goal is to provide learning opportunities for your child, you will want more than a few pictures to color in, although this is an important skill to practice. Between the ages of 3 and 7, the so-called formative years, your child is ready and willing to learn. This is a great time to start introducing the basic skills that your child will use for the rest of their lives such as counting, reading and writing. With your help and supervision, your child can do math worksheets, alphabet worksheets and much more.

While the first portion of many school years is used to review basic concepts, teachers quickly move on to new subjects, assuming most children have had plenty of exposure to the basic concepts, including letter and number recognition. The ultimate goal in kindergarten is to get children ready to read, which takes a great deal of time. Teachers typically move on when a majority of the class is ready to learn the basics of reading. If your child is left behind, it could leave him behind for the rest of his school career.

For example after a worksheet on counting, you can ask the child to pick out 3 biscuits and 2 carrots from many. Remember, a child is learning many new things at once. A child of this age has an amazing capacity to learn many new things fast. He can also forget them equally fast. Doing many interesting worksheets with cartoons etc would be fun for him and would help continually reinforce what is learnt. Give positive feedback and encourage a child. His finer motor skills are just developing. Do not expect or try for perfection. Do not give any writing exercise too early i.e until he is fully comfortable with holding a pencil. Spend sufficient time and continually reinforce the learning in day-to-day situations. Most importantly, it should be fun for the teacher and the taught!

Letter Books: These are books that frequently use the same phonemes over and over so students can understand them (the link between a letter and the sound it makes). For instance, "Baby bear bounced balls". These books are really good, especially if you have the book as a colouring book that you can fill out together. Here is a good activity: say the sound like "b says...buh buh, ball" and then students race to colour in their balls in their workbook. You can hang these up after and everyone will have fun.

Well made kindergarten worksheets can be interesting for children to do and can be of great use in reinforcing basic concepts. Completing the activity in a worksheet can give children an immense sense of accomplishment. Kindergarten ABC worksheets should have different activities to help children identify the various letters of the alphabet. The activities may involve very simple things like colouring, ticking, drawing a line to match items etc. Using attractive illustrations and cartoon characters would make it more fun for children. The activities should be graded, i.e initial activities should be very simple and easy (but should be fun with good pictures etc, so as to interest the child); later worksheets may involve a little bit more work.

For example, once your child starts kindergarten, they will be expected to sit still and complete tasks for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time. If your child is used to doing a worksheet or two, they will be able to do this quite easily, and will understand that they need to complete the task before they can move on to the next activity. Worksheets also help your child to learn how to follow instructions, and teach them about following rules.
