There are better materials out there, so do not resort to skill and drill. The very worst problem of skill and drill worksheets is the greatly increased chance of a practiced mistake. The same problem will likely appear several times on the same sheet. A wrong answer once means a wrong answer several times; and a practiced mistake takes hundreds of correct repetitions to fix. This danger alone is important enough to never use any worksheet. I am quite serious about how difficult it is to repair a practiced mistake. Learning is hard enough. Re-learning is much more difficult.

Anyone can type columns of addition, subtraction, multiplication, etc. problems; but these worksheets will be bad for your child. Do not trust what you can not see.

Performing poor in math in any grade is like breaking some steps in the whole staircase. As broken steps make the whole staircase risky or scary to use in the future, incomplete math competencies in lower grades make math very hard in the high school. So, what it takes to be smart in mathematics? My answer is; stay focused on math in each and every level of your studies. Participate in your class math practice sessions. Ask your teacher lots of questions until you are not clear about any concept. Mathematics is a subject of solving the problems on paper by hand rather than only to read them. As in case of Social Studies taking more readings make you smart, in math practicing lots of problems and solving them by hand makes you smart.

In a growing move amongst home-schoolers to look at online courses, one subject area lends itself towards a bit more hesitation from the group. Home-schoolers want to like online courses because of the flexibility of them, but with regard to math, they are just not so sure about the validity of online math. There is reason for this, but many students are having good success with online math programs, and slowly but surely, the homeschooling community is coming around. Home-schoolers tend to shy away from online math due to the perception that math is better learned with a real person giving instruction and students following along in their textbooks. Many students learn well this way, but online math courses operate on a different philosophy. They presume that students can learn to understand material with information, practice, and feedback, and in essence, can become their own teachers. This is a far more effective method of instruction in the long run, and while it does take some adjustment, many programs make this method very viable for students of all abilities.

Schools today seem to do a poor job of preparing students for math at the middle and high school level. Here are 5 tips that parents can use to help their child be successful at math. Start early. Before your child goes to preschool, they need to be familiar with small numbers, up to 10. Two is easy to teach and point out. Pair of socks, shoes, etc. Five fingers on a hand and toes on feet. Ten total fingers and toes. At the preschool level, start counting up to 20. Add small numbers, 1 plus 1 is 2. 2 plus 1 is 3. You can even begin the fraction of one half. Half a sandwich, and other food items are a great start. When finishing kindergarten, your child needs to be able to count past 20 and know what larger numbers mean as well. Not working with them, just be familiar.

If a child finds any activity too difficult, give him an easier one. It is important that the child does not get frustrated. Remember that different children have greatly varying levels of comprehension and pace of learning. It will help if the worksheets are well-illustrated. Use of cartoon characters would make it more interesting for a child. Encapsulating common situations encountered at home, school, in the market place etc and using common objects known to children would make the worksheets more relevant.

Most volumes begin with an explanation of basic arithmetic operations namely: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Reference tables are supplied to provide clues for quick mental arithmetic and mastery of math facts. When ready to be tested, the student can select a drill, which has 10 questions and are selected from a database of number pairs for calculation. The Basic Level volumes use simple single digit numbers and the interactive math software at the Advanced Level uses mostly double digit numbers for math practice problems. Each drill is then scored and timed with the results saved. With the test records, students can follow their own progress and adults who may be supervising can monitor progress and assess if there are any learning issues that require intervention.
