This person needs to have a background in education and, ideally, should be trained in the latest educational methods, like brain-based teaching/learning. I personally would never use any materials with my child that did not specifically mention being "brain-based." I am not talking about just "research-based." I see more and more sites claiming to have research-based materials, but what I find is definitely NOT based on how the brains actually learns. Brain-based learning is relatively new in the educational world, but most worksheet sites and materials are using old science or, more often, no science at all.

Patterns and sequencing and basic addition and subtraction should follow on from counting and number recognition. By the time your child is starting kindergarten or school, they should be able to count to 20 with ease, write numbers, do simple addition sums, and have some understanding of patterns and sequences. Even if they are attending preschool, extra practice at home will help them improve their math.

Well made kindergarten worksheets can be interesting for children to do and can be of great use in reinforcing basic concepts. Completing the activity in a worksheet can give children an immense sense of accomplishment. Kindergarten ABC worksheets should have different activities to help children identify the various letters of the alphabet. The activities may involve very simple things like colouring, ticking, drawing a line to match items etc. Using attractive illustrations and cartoon characters would make it more fun for children. The activities should be graded, i.e initial activities should be very simple and easy (but should be fun with good pictures etc, so as to interest the child); later worksheets may involve a little bit more work.

This does not mean that you should stop playing counting and number games with your child; it just adds another tool to your toolbox. Worksheets help to bring some structure into a child has education using a systematic teaching method, particularly important with math, which follows a natural progression. Learning about numbers includes recognizing written numbers as well as the quantity those numbers represent. Mathematics worksheets should provide a variety of fun activities that teach your child both numbers and quantity. Look for a variety of different ways to present the same concepts. This aids understanding and prevents boredom. Color-by-Numbers pictures are a fun way to learn about numbers and colors too.

Performing poor in math in any grade is like breaking some steps in the whole staircase. As broken steps make the whole staircase risky or scary to use in the future, incomplete math competencies in lower grades make math very hard in the high school. So, what it takes to be smart in mathematics? My answer is; stay focused on math in each and every level of your studies. Participate in your class math practice sessions. Ask your teacher lots of questions until you are not clear about any concept. Mathematics is a subject of solving the problems on paper by hand rather than only to read them. As in case of Social Studies taking more readings make you smart, in math practicing lots of problems and solving them by hand makes you smart.

Create a comfortable study zone. Turn off outside distractions such as cell phones, radios or TVs. Make sure your child is not tired or hungry so that he or she can focus all attention on learning. Also try to keep the lessons consistent with what is being learned in school. A quick chat with the teacher or signing up for an online newsletter from the classroom are ways to keep tabs on the lesson plans. Since 3rd grade math relies on the concepts that were learned during kindergarten, first and second grades, do not be afraid to start your child at a lower level. With adaptive learning, the programs will not move on to the next level until your child has a firm grasp on the current material. The online games will be a wonderful way for your child to catch up on basic arithmetic concepts and be comfortable using them across applications.
